Beacon Roofing Supply, Inc., the second-largest roofing materials distributor in the United States, announced Oct. 1 that it has acquired Applicators Sales and Service, a smaller distributor based out of Portland, Maine.
Scott Koocher, President of Applicators, said in a statement, “The Koocher and Robinov families have built a great business and now are pleased to pass the torch to Beacon. … We were presented with many strategic opportunities, but we chose to align with Beacon not only because of its size and reputation in New England and across the industry but because Beacon shares our belief that success comes from hard work and a commitment to your employees and customers.”
Beacon CEO and President Paul Isabella also emphasized the strategic compatibility of the two companies, and said he looks forward to expanding his business’ presence in northern New England.
Playing in the Big Leagues
Applicators has primarily been a distributor of residential roofing, siding and windows up to this point.
The company, which was started by David Koocher and Jerry Robinov, has remained in the families since its founding in 1958. Applicators has four branches in Maine: Portland, Bangor, Augusta and Auburn. One additional branch is located in Salem, New Hampshire.
Applicators posts an annual sales number of approximately $48 million. In contrast, Beacon’s annual sales amount to an average of over $2 billion and cover both residential and commercial roofing and guttering.
Beacon has also had recent growth across the border in Canada, announcing its acquisition of Vancouver company All Weather Products Ltd. on Aug. 29.
Even prior to the acquisition, Beacon held about 10% of the market share in roofing products distribution, with 254 branches in 40 states and Canada, making it the largest publicly traded roofing company in the United States. ABC Supply, a closely held private company with 450 branches in 44 states, beats out Beacon as the overall largest distributor of roofing and vinyl siding products.
